A viable 21 hour week ?
The NEF in UK has been writing about 21 hour working weeks. A thought on how to support this in Austria with a 21 hour school week... enabling teachers to work a 21 hour week, and kids to be in school similar hours to parents, allowing more family time...
Proposal - Split schools into 2 groups, with two lots of 3 day week
A - in school Monday Tuesday and Wednesday morning, with Wednesday afternoon on field trips to Museums, Art Galleries, Companies etc
B - Wednesday morning on field trips to Museums, Art Galleries, Companies etc and then in school Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday
It would seem to ease capacity in school buildings. If neccessary during transition period, eLearning can be offered for the remaining two days, building on capacity created during the Corona virus of March 2020. That eLearning could be offered in small groups locally, along the street, optimising places and enabling kids to walk to school, lowering traffic congestion.
More teacher capacity could be brought in for certain age groups with optimisation of older students, parents, grandparents, migrants and people between jobs.
Peer group learning could be encouraged, matching learners individually or in small groups with students ahead of them. With languages as a focus for example, A1 migrant German learners with B2 migrant German speakers, and B1 Austrian English learners with C1 or native migrant English speakers. During the shutdown these pairs might meet as pairs, or converse through internet applications reducing loneliness at home of both say student learners and grandparents or hospital patients not being visited. Hospitals and senior homes might be able to support this with groups of trainers sitting in the cafe or internet room talking to individuals near or far. Tools to support this include busuu, lingophant and speaketto.
Possible opportunities to pilot parts of this with/this in the OPENschool Vienna March 2020 during the shutdown, and with some hospitals and pensionistenheim.
