The consequences were sometimes grotesque. Clubs were able to use the gym in the school at Kinkplatz in Penzing for training. When it rained, however, a bucket stood in the middle of the field because the roof was no longer tight. Less than 25 years after it was constructed in 1994 in the form of a dragonfly, the school building, which caused a sensation due to its glass construction, became a renovation project. Now the city of Vienna has drawn a line: As a school, the Glaspalast on Kinkplatz is no longer used, that much is certain according to a decision made by City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ). However, the question now arises as to what purpose the problem building can still be used for.
The negative side effect of this decision is that in future sports clubs will not be able to use the gym as a training option. Ball sports clubs such as volleyball, handball or basketball in the federal capital are looking for every square meter of hall space, like drivers otherwise looking for a parking space in the city center. This applies above all to the training sessions, but also for championship games.
The property at Kinkplatz is a prime example of how large the gap between modern architecture and functionality can be in everyday life. The school building designed by architect Helmut Richter has even received an architectural award. For students and teachers, however, their "workplace" was almost a pain, especially in summer due to the high temperatures. The struggle with water ingress in the construction, which was equipped with a lot of glass and steel, became a nerve test, also for the district, which was responsible for the preservation of the building. The consequence was that, for about two years now, teaching had not taken place at the Kinkplatz permanent renovation case, but in an alternative district on Toricelligasse.
Refurbishment would have cost 55 million euros
Now, due to the high costs, the city council for education finally decided to end school at Kinkplatz. A new investigation has shown that a general renovation would have cost 55 million euros. As the responsible city councilor, he was "not responsible" for this expensive renovation, argues Czernohorszky, citing this as the reason why the Glass Palace is no longer used as a school. The need for classrooms for schoolchildren is to be guaranteed in a different form: there is an extension to school in Linzerstraße, and the new West Education Campus is also available. In addition, the current vocational school in Goldschlaggasse is to be made available as a middle school in order to meet the demand for school.
City Council also sees "architectural responsibility"
Instead of an expensive general renovation, the city of Vienna literally prefers to build somewhere else and uses a new concept. By 2023, further modern training facilities in the form of an educational campus are to be created at 14 locations. There, kindergarten, elementary school and middle schools are built in a closely linked manner. The SPÖ is thus also pursuing its school policy line towards comprehensive school, the children should be tempted to switch to secondary schools right next to it instead of moving to high school. The focus is on the areas of Vienna in which the urban development areas with many new apartments are currently located, especially in the Donaustadt and in Floridsdorf.
Search for reuse options
However, for the city of Vienna, the problem with the empty glass palace on Kinkplatz is by no means over after the end of school. The city is now looking for reuse options as the owner of the house, but this is also not so easy for an object that struggles with water ingress. The glass-steel construction, which won an award, should not be completely demolished. The city council of education assured that they had a "responsibility for building culture". He also wants to attach importance to this in subsequent use.
In the district administration of Penzing, for the time being, after the determination in the town hall, they are cautious. "We are waiting for the suggestions that come," said Robert Pschirer, the deputy of the district head Andrea Kalchbrenner, who is on vacation, of the "Wiener Zeitung". You also have to know whether the building will be preserved at all. One option would be to set up new apartments.

Nigel Stonhamand interesting , i just read the first line out loud and recalled the Haus der Industry program from 2002, stating they wished 50% of the education in Austria to be done in English. When I asked recently for a contact, they told me they have a different focus now...
Summer 2012 I was wondering what my purpose is, and set an intention to spend the rest of my life "travelling the world spreading happiness". This based on work in happiness field since 2006. Alongside this, to make it sustainable, I am a multi project manager - supporting projects from others and initiating some of my own - and offer happiness coaching, strategy mentoring and English training.
One of my passions is EDUCATION and I am "nurturing learning communities along the street" through creation of Matrix Learning Spaces under The Learning Street . I had an early experience in Moedling, happiest city on earth, setting up a library and computer room. The intention is that members have access to a local Matrix Learning Space, like a library, with fast, reliable, affordable internet in a clean, warm, space, where a team of learners follow the same or different learning paths under the guidance of a mentor who motivates and inspires. The desire is to reach people - especially kids in holiday camps, refugee camps and living on the street - enabling the sort of quality education outlined in UN SDG 4.
With a focus on PASSION, another of my own passions, I connect people with passion. To their own passion as a passion coach, to others with passion to increase social capital, and using my own passion. This under Vienna Hub, which is currently running a series of monthly events based at and from Regus Nineteen in Vienna.
The Vienna Happiness Project is a way to pursue the Spreading Happiness intention, and it runs various activities, as well as playing an active part in the formation of the European Happiness Association, (EUHA!).
Focussed on moving people and situations from A to B as fast as possible, Nigel applies creative energy and a light touch to deliver return in investment through new strategies and tactics with you and your teams. He focusses on personal Passion, in the belief it leads to Happiness, which leads to bigger contribution and higher performing people and teams.
Leaving the UK aged 37 with 100 words of German, Nigel settled in Vienna ~ “City of my Dreams” ~ with a new family. He founded First Tuesday Vienna after 5 months having seen the idea in UK, and led a virtual team of professionals to deliver “ideas meet money” in the heart of Europe for over three years. In 2001 while freelancing at Red Bull internet, he was introduced to Ryze. That led to ecademy, LinkedIn, openBC/Xing, facebook etc.
Meeting many passionate people in this time, both on and offline, he realised the importance of passion in both life and business. He created “Women with Passion” in 2004 to present role models for others. Fully engaged by now in networking and “web spinning”, in 2005 he launched Vienna Hub, attended by co-founders of both openBC/XING and ecademy. In 2008 he registered the international kulturverein blue sky stuff as a non profit association in Mödling ~ “Happiest City on Earth”. .. blue sky stuff “inspires and motivates people to find and follow their passion”, Vienna Hub “connects people with passion”.
Asked for his own passion, Nigel says “People, Education, Internet, and English..”.

While working on strategy at offerfeast.com with a long term friend, Nigel talked about his role as one of “joining dots” and found joy in the cover of Robs’ second book, where something unique but similar appears.
Nigel has walked into many peoples lives, albeit briefly, and works hard to connect “fast and deep” (~What’s your name ? ~What’s your Passion?) with a view to create value from these connections, and to encourage better personal awareness. He has actively coached people in Happiness since 2006, and in order to widen his skills is now undergoing coach training with Robbins Madenes Training. Nigel describes Tony Robbins as “perhaps the greatest coach alive today”, and appreciates the directness of the Strategic Intervention approach. favourite quotes are ~ “emotion is energy in motion”, “If you’re not growing, you’re dying” and use of the triad to bring about change in people.
